Welcome to Half Moon Magic!  

All of the crystalized books at Half Moon Magic have been crystalized in a sodium borate solution, dried through, and sealed with several coats of clear gloss enamel for preservation.  Additional creative detail is then added once dry.

Although the books have been sprayed with an enamel they are still considered fragile and are for display purposes only and should be kept indoors in a cool dry place to be enjoyed for years to come.  These unique one-of-a-kind pieces will become conversation pieces in your home, so I recommend displaying them on a turntable or lazy susan so that they can be rotated for full viewing.  

Most of my books have been purchased used, but whenever I can’t find a used copy, or if a book is on a banned books list, I purchase new through my local independent bookstore.

There is a science to crystalizing a book, but I never know quite how the crystals are going to materialize.  I can control things like page folds, solution concentration, time and temperature but each book has a unique history and a little magic of its own.  Sometimes the color from a cover will bleed out and dye the pages.  Sometimes the binding will dissolve or the cover will fall apart.  All of these variables, both known and unknown come together to form the foundation for a unique piece of art which then tells me what it wants to become.  I then add a little magic of my own :)

Why “Half Moon Magic”?  Great question!  The half moon in the first and third quarters of the lunar cycle are creatively fertile times.  In the first quarter it symbolizes a period of strength and determination where emotional energy can be focused into creative passions.  In the third it symbolizes a period of introspection and reflection that allows creativity and growth for the next stage and new intentions.  This shop is my passion project, creative outlet, daily therapy, and physical manifestation of listening to my intuition.
